imageISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed all four provinces to submit detailed reports separately over living conditions of women prisoners in the different jails of country.

The apex court also appointed Asma Jehangir to assist the court for improving facilities and living condition of women prisoners. The three-member bench of the court headed by Justice Mian Saqib Nisar comprising Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed and Justice Mushir Alam resumed hearing of the case regarding miserable living conditions in jails for women prisoners.

During the course of proceedings, Punjab, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces submitted initial reports regarding women prisoners and facilities provided to them.

The court expressed annoyance over Sindh government for not submitting report.

Justice Saqib also expressed annoyance over absence of Chief Secretary Sindh. According to report submitted by the Punjab government there are 843 women prisoners in jails.

As many as 61 women were locked up in serious offences and 172 were locked up in minor cases and trials against 586 women prisoners were in progress, the report stated.

According to Khyber Pakhtunkhwas government report there were 175 women prisoners in jails and 41 women were convicted by courts and cases against 132 women were under trial.

In Balochistan, 27 women were imprisoned and all facilities were available to these women in jails, the report submitted by the provincial government revealed.

Later the court directed the provinces to submit detailed report and adjourned hearing of the case for 15 days.
