imageISLAMABAD: Parliamentary Secretary for Federal Education and Professional Training Dr. Darshan on Wednesday apprised the National Assembly that new national education policy would be finalized till December and be launched in January 2016.

Replying to various questions during Question Hour, he said that the new policy would be uniformly implemented in all provinces including Azad Jammu Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

He said that the revision of National Education Policy (NEP) 2009 was also under consideration in the ministry. "The NEP continues to be a jointly owned national document ever since the amendment in the constitution through 18th amendment," he said.

He said the NEP was placed under the 3rd Inter Provincial Education Minister's Conference (IPEMC) which approved formation of NEP 2009 Review Committee to suggest changes in the policy in view of 18th Amendment scenario and global modern trends in education sector.

Dr. Darshan said, in 2009 policy, it was also proposed that 7 per cent of GDP would be allocated to the education.

He said that currently 1.5 per cent of GDP was being spent on education which would be increased to 2 per cent.

He said that under the policy it was also decided to enroll 6.2 million children in schools but still around 6.2 million children were out of schools.

To another question, the Secretary said neither Higher Education Commission (HEC) nor the Ministry has sent any student abroad under students exchange programme.

To a supplementary question, he said that two per cent quota was allocated in Ph.D scholarships for minority students which would be enhanced to 5 per cent.
