KARACHI: Commissioner Karachi, Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui Wednesday said the Karachi divisional and district administration imposed a fine of Rs. 124,500 on 52 shopkeepers while two were arrested and sent to jail for violating the official price list of edible items.
Total 18 milk sellers, 21 grocers, 10 chicken sellers, two vegetable retailers and one flour miller were challaned.
The profiteers were fined in areas including Liaquatabad, Gulberg, Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, New Karachi, Model Colony, Saddar, Aram Bagh, Civil Lines, Garden, Harbour, Jamshed Quarters, Gulzar-e-Hijri, Orangi, Airport, South, Central, West, East, Malir and Korangi districts.
Administrative officers have been assigned permanent duties at the time of auction in wholesale markets of fruits and vegetables to curb artificial shortage of commodities, the Commissioner said.
