imageKARACHI: Sindh Governor Dr. Ishratul Ebad Khan has stressed the need to expedite efforts for providing civic facilities and improving infrastructure of the metropolis keeping in view the rapidly rising population.

He was talking to Norway's envoy Leif Larsen, who along with Honorary Consul General Karachi Moonis and First Secretary (Consular Affairs) Homma Latif, called on the Governor at Governor House here on Wednesday.

The Governor observed that the population pressure is continuously rising in Karachi and one of the major contributory factors is the migration from other parts of the country.

He called for steps to deal with this population pressure as various problems are surfacing due to this situation in the commercial hub of the country.

He said that efforts need to be expedited to provide basic facilities to the existing population which included infrastructure development, water supply and drainage schemes and improvement in transportation system. Dr. Ishratul Ebad said the government is funding projects such as S-III, K-IV, Mass Transit and infrastructure development schemes, but the private sector would have to come forward to investment in development schemes to assist the government in its development activities.

The Governor said Karachi despite being the biggest city of Pakistan and the 7th biggest in world in terms of population, still has the honour of being one of the cheapest cities.

He said though Karachi is functioning at 30 per cent of its capacity, it is contributing 70 per cent of the country's total revenue. He said the city offers vast business opportunities.

Norway's envoy Leif Larsen told the Governor that Karachi is a lively city as against negative impression wrongly spread about it.

The envoy said Norway's investors will be encouraged to invest here and utilise its full potential. Leif Larsen said Norway is assisting here in vocational training and human resource development.
