imageJAKARTA: Indonesia's central bank expects the rupiah to trade at around 12,200 to 12,800 to the dollar on average this year, depending on global economic conditions, its governor said on Monday.

Bank Indonesia (BI) Governor Agus Martowardojo told a state budget meeting with the parliament that the rupiah was under pressure in December when Indonesia saw 28.4 trillion rupiah ($2.25 billion) of capital flight due to global sentiment.

"BI will always maintain (the rupiah) to curb its volatility," Martowardojo said.

In mid-December, the rupiah touched its weakest level since 1998, at 12,930 per dollar, before it strengthened. On Monday, it traded at 12,595 per dollar at 0530 GMT.
