Popular photo-sharing site Instagram overtakes Twitter in terms of users and popularity. Instagram recently announced that it have 300 million monthly active users which surpassed Twitter’s 284 million users.
According to foreign media reports, Instagram has been growing strong for four years now, and despite fears that the acquisition by Facebook would screw it up, there’s now 70 million photos shared each day and over 30 billion total. Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom says “Over the past four years, what began as two friends with a dream has grown into a global community”.
Facebook, which owns Instagram, claims 864 million daily active users, making it by far the biggest social network in the world. Instagram is also working to introduce ‘blue tick’ mark on verified accounts for celebrities and public figures.
Instagram’s rapid growth, while impressive, is hardly surprising. Visual posts especially video have become the hottest growth area in social networking. Facebook has been changing its news feed over the past year to better showcase video content, and Twitter is focusing more on building up its Vine short-video service. Advertisers are also demanding more video options, and online services are hustling to meet that demand, foreign media reported.
In an attempt to get rid of fake accounts or those breaking the company’s rules, Instagram said it is deleting spammy accounts. The company has warned that some users may find they have fewer followers as a result.
