KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali on growers' demand and in public interest has increased minimum price of sugarcane from Rs 155 to Rs 182 per maund.
Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, he asked the sugar mills owners to start procurement of sugarcane at the fixed rates and start the crushing season.
The Chief Minister said "the prices of agricultural inputs have increased considerably, therefore the Agriculture Department, in consultation with the growers and sugar mill owners, had fixed the sugarcane price at Rs 182 per maund but the mill owners challenged it in the court, therefore it was reduced to Rs 155 per maund but this was not accepted by the growers. Now it has been re-fixed at Rs 182 per maund".
To a question he said that the support price of wheat has been fixed at Rs 1250 per maund.
He said that the traders have imported substandard wheat which is not fit for human consumption. "We have taken up the issue with the federal government because it is a provincial subject," he said.
To another question he said that the Sindh government was giving a subsidy of Rs 4.5 billion on wheat to provide the wheat flour at reasonable rates to the people.
Replying to a question, he said that the Sindh government was ready to hold local bodies elections but the same could not be held due to the pending case in the Supreme Court.
