imageISLAMABAD: The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) will construct a sustainable rain water dam to meet water requirements of New Islamabad International Airport (NIIA).

The dam will be constructed in coordination with Small Dams Organization, Islamabad, according to Project Director, CCA, Islamabad International Airport project Islamabad here on Wednesday.

The CAA is responsible for execution of the state of the art airport which will be the first green field airport of Pakistan with the facility to cater for the largest commercial aircraft presently operating worldwide.

The Authority has already decided for provisioning of security on complete perimeter fencing by installing perimeter intrusion detection system in line with the international standards at airport.

For this purpose, a consultant is being engaged to conduct complete survey of the area measuring 18.4 kilometers and prepare initial report.

The report, to be submitted soon, will suggest various economically viable options available for installing the perimeter intrusion detection system in line with the international standards including security audit and risk assessment, feasibility study report, conceptual design report and rough cost estimates.

It is worth mentioning that the end of March next year has been set by the government as the new deadline for the completion of the New Islamabad International Airport.

According to official sources, 98 per cent of the civil works and hydrant refueling systems and 55 per cent work on the air traffic control has been completed.

The local police and the civil administration has also been directed to help the CAA in clearing the area from encroachers.

Under the directives of the prime minister, a power plant will be installed to ensure regular electricity to the airport which would cater to the needs of 15 million passengers in a year.

The airport will have 15 boarding bridges and will be able to handle 400,000 metric tons of cargo. The government has ordered the installation of latest baggage handling system at the airport.

The groundbreaking of the project was jointly performed in April 2007 and it was supposed to be completed within 30 months, initially the cost of the project was estimated to be Rs37 billion.

Later, PC-I of the project was revised in March 2012 at a cost of Rs66 billion.

The CAA had once again revised its expenditures putting them at Rs95 billion and October 2016 was the anticipated completion date of the project.
