imageISLAMABAD: The senior most Judge of the Islamabad High Court, Justice Riaz Ahmad Khan will retire on Wednesday (May 14) after serving more than three years to the litigants in IHC.

Justice Riaz Ahmad Khan was elevated to the Islamabad High Court Bench on 21-12-2010.

He was born on 15-05-1952 in Nowshera (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) and served on different positions including Senior Civil Judge.

He was appointed as Assistant Advocate General (N.W.F.P) in 1997. Later on, he was appointed as Additional Deputy Prosecutor General Accountability, NAB (F), Peshawar and remained on that post for three years. He was elected as Member Provincial Bar Council (N.W.F.P) in 1999.

However, due to the lack of judges in the IHC the number of pending cases in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) has escalated to over 11,000.

Although the IHC disposed of many high profile cases during 2013, the general public is suffering due to the shortage of judges as thousands of litigants are still waiting for justice.

The four judges who are serving at IHC are Chief Justice Muhammed Anwar Khan Kasi, Justice Riaz Ahmad Khan, Justice Noorul Haq N Qureshi and Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui. But Justice Riaz Ahmad is going to retire on May 14 and only three judges will be left at the court if the vacant seats are not filled.

Under the IHC Act total strength of IHC judges is seven in addition to the Chief Justice and six other judges to be appointed one from each province, one from Islamabad Capital territory and one from Federally Administered Tribal Areas. Furthermore, the Chief

Justice shall also be appointed in rotation respectively.

Since its establishment in January 2011, the IHC could not get its total strength of judges as per mentioned in IHC Act.
