imageISLAMABAD: National Highway Authority (NHA) has installed 57 permanent weigh stations at different locations to save National Highway Network from menace of overloading as overloading is causing damage to roads.

In the first phase of the project, the Authority installed 42 permanent weigh stations, out of which 37 are operational while in the second phase, of the total 34 planned stations, 20 were installed and are now operational.

Sources at NHA on Wednesday said the Authority has also planned 37 such stations in the third phase and work on their installation is expected to start in coming months.

The sources said in addition, 20 mobile weigh stations at critical locations were also deployed.

The sources also revealed a meeting with Chief Secretary of Sindh with regard to forestall overloading of trucks and said the meeting reviewed the implementation status of axle-load regime to end damage to National Highways & Motorways.

The representatives of transporters, car carriers and cement manufacturers appreciated such stakeholders meetings for implementation of axle load regime and to control overloading and they gave their inputs with regard to problems being faced by them in the implementation of axle load regime.

They assured that if these problems are removed they would willingly participate in the implementation of the axle load regime which included installation of weigh stations on all entry and exit points of every big city through reputable companies, all cement and fertilizer units before exit from their premises should clearly indicate weight being carried by that truck/vehicle and port authorities including dry ports should be advised to enforce axle load control regime through establishment of weigh stations at their entry and exit points.

The sources said after detailed deliberations on various issues the meeting took some decisions which included that all unauthorized weigh stations shall be removed.

Cement manufacturers and exporters must desist from overloading their cargo beyond permissible limits and length of car carrier trucks to be defined and formulized by the concerned ministry/department to avoid road damages.

The meeting also decided that the issue of tax levied by government will be taken up with Federal Bureau of Revenue (FBR) by Ministry of Communications.

The port authorities would also start to enforce and implement axle load control regime, it was further decided.
