imageISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday said the government had assigned the highest priority to control narcotics and initiated far-reaching policy measures to counter the menace of drug abuse.

The Prime Minister, in his message on the occasion of International Day Against Drug Abuse to be observed on June 26, said the government would eliminate this menace with the help of community, non-profit social organizations and media.

He said there was a need to sensitize the youth about dangers of drugs and media had a key role to play in this regard.

"Parents and families have also huge obligation to fulfill. Youth is our precious national asset and future of this country. They cannot and must not be left at the mercy of drugs and drug dealers," the Prime Minister emphasized.

"I am confident that with commitment and dedication of community, media and the government, we will achieve our shared goal of a drug-free Pakistan," he said.

He said, "In line with our global commitments, we look forward to forging cooperation with world community to control the scourge of drugs and illicit trafficking." Pakistan is a signatory to global conventions and protocols pertaining to control of drug abuse and illicit trafficking, he added.

He said Pakistan's efforts for narcotics control were aligned with its global commitments and international conventions.

It merit mentioned here that the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking invites our attention to the dangers drugs pose to the individuals, families, communities and society on the whole, he added.

He said, "The menace of drugs is formidable, warranting rapid response at various levels. It is alarming that prevalence of drugs amongst the youth is greater than other age groups."
