LAHORE: The novel coronavirus are continuing unabated across the province, as 50 more fatalities and 1,740 fresh cases reported in the last 24 hours.
As per the government's Covid-19 portal, with 50 deaths, the provincial death toll has reached to 1,081. With 1,740 fresh cases, the province of Punjab has 55,878 corona cases till the filing of this report. About 17,730 people have recovered in Punjab up till now.
As per statistics made available, the country recorded 2,669 recoveries in the past 24 hours, taking the total number to 56,390.
Governor Punjab Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar has appealed to more than 56,000 people who have recovered after defeating Corona to donate their plasma.
In his video message released on Tuesday, the governor said, "Unfortunately, the number of corona patients and deaths is increasing alarmingly and there are more than 25,000 corona patients in Lahore alone. We have no option except imposing a smart lockdown in Lahore."
He said that Allah Almighty has given an opportunity to those who have recovered to help others. "We all have to work together to save the Pakistani People from the corona epidemic. There is no room for negligence in all safety measures, including masks. To avoid corona, government SOPs must be fully implemented and there is no option to avoid corona," he added.
Opposition Leader Mian Shahbaz Sharif who is in self quarantine at his Model Town residence after being tested Corona positive, said in a statement that rise in number of deaths from novel coronavirus is worrisome.
Shahbaz said that instead of self-deception, an immediate meeting of Council of Common Interests (CCI) should be convened. He also called for a joint strategy against coronavirus after consultation with doctors, administration, political and military leadership.
In another development, three private sector teaching hospitals of Lahore city have allocated 450 beds for free treatment of coronavirus patients.
On the other hand, Punjab Health Minister Dr Yasmin Rashid said in a briefing that Lahore is now the epicentre of the corona pandemic in the province with highest number of corona cases, however, we are trying our best to control the pandemic; we have been able to control and contain the number of cases as well as deaths to as low as possible.
"Though statistics indicate that we have fought the pandemic better than other countries of the region, yet we have to improve further and save more lives," she said, adding: "We are taking all out measures to control the pandemic and all necessary facilities are being provided to the people."
