drugsISLAMABAD: International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking will be observed tomorrow on June 26 across the world including Pakistan with a resolve to eliminate the menace of drug trafficking.

In this regard, Anti Narcotics Force (ANF) will organize a drug burning ceremony. Parliamentary Secretary Narcotics Inayat Ali Shah will be the chief guest on the occasion, while Director General ANF Malik Zafar Iqbal and other senior officials of ANF and diplomats will attend the ceremony.

"United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Islamabad will launch World Drug Report 2012 tomorrow", said UNODC Representative in Pakistan Jeremy Douglas.

He said that the World Drug Report provides an overview of recent trends and the drug situation in terms of production, trafficking, consumption and the consequences of illicit drug use in terms of treatment, drug-related diseases and drug-related deaths.

"It also presents a long-term perspective on the characteristics and evolution of the drug problem and the main factors that shaped it" he added.

The report discusses the main characteristics of contemporary drug problem, followed by an overview of the shifts observed over last few decades, before concluding with an analysis of the driving factors that shaped the evolution of drug problem, including a brief outlook for its likely future direction.

It may be mention here that in December 1987 the UN General Assembly in view to create an international society free of drug abuse decided to observe June 26 as day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

In 1998 the UN General Assembly adopted a declaration to address the global drug problem and expresses UN members' commitment to fighting the problem.
