The Ministry of Law and Justice has opposed the "Contempt of Court (Amendment) Bill, 2016", moved by Senator Farhatullah Babar to amend the contempt of court Ordinance, 2003. The ministry in his brief document informed the Senate Committee on Law, that the bill merits opposition, that in case the expression "to lower authority of the court" is omitted, it will give delinquent an opportunity to ridicule the Court.
The current scenario, punishment provided in law seems deficient and further reducing the same will be counterproductive for smooth discipline of the Court, it added. Therefore the bill may be opposed, ministry opined in its brief to the committee. However, it is pertinent to mention here that the Senate Standing Committee on Law and Justice in its meeting had decided to summon representatives of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and Bar Councils of the country to discuss the Contempt of Court Amendment, Bill.
