BRUSSELS: European Union antitrust regulators handed down a 6.2-million-euro ($6.91 million) fine to Italian steel abrasives maker Pometon on Wednesday for taking part in a cartel to coordinate prices for almost four years.
While other cartel members France's Winoa and German peers Metalltechnik Schmidt and Eisenwerk Wuerth admitted wrongdoing in April 2014 in return for a reduced total fine of 30.7 million euros, Pometon fought the European Commission charges.
US/UK company Ervin escaped a sanction for alerting the cartel to the EU competition enforcer.
"The steel abrasives cartel adversely affected a wide range of European manufacturing industries to the ultimate detriment of consumers," European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said in a statement.
Steel abrasives are loose steel particles used for cleaning metal surfaces in the steel, car, metallurgy and petrochemical industries.
