TOKYO: Japan's Mitsubishi Chemical Corp said it shut the 539,000-tonnes-per-year No. 2 naphtha cracker at its Kashima plant, northwest of Tokyo, before dawn on Friday due to an unspecified mechanical problem.

The company has no timetable for a restart, but the shutdown is unlikely to be as long as a month, a company spokesman said.
