imageISLAMABAD: Minister for Information, Broadcasting, National Heritage, Law, Justice and Human Rights Pervaiz Rashid on Wednesday said a three pronged strategy of awareness, prevention and enforcement was being pursued to eradicate corruption from the country.

Replying to the question of legislators in National Assembly during Question Hour, he said National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has been successful not only in bringing the culprits to book but also recovering billions of plundered money.

He said NAB has recovered Rs 3,880.47 million and completed 869 inquiries, 201 investigations since June 2013 while 237 references have been filed in various courts.

He said NAB also set up prevention committees in order to develop doable recommendations for eradication of corruption.

He said the authority is also engaged with different government and non-governmental organizations to fight against this menace.

Corruption in the country has been reduced significantly in a period of only one year as country's ranking amongst corrupt countries has decreased from 127 to 126.

Referring to the recent report of Transparency International, he said corruption in the country has been reduced.

Various measures are being taken to enhance awareness against corruption by holding workshops, media campaigns, advertisements, character buildings of future generations in educational institutions, messages against corruption in utility and mobile bills.

NAB is engaged to fight corruption including signing MoU with higher education commission for creating awareness amongst students of various universities.

NAB has collaborated with Pakistan Cricket Board, Pakistan Cricket Team, Motorway Police, PTV, PTA, PIA, SNGPL and IESCO to display and print "Say no to Corruption."

NAB is set to sign MoU with UNODC for joint efforts against corruption. Generic and sector specific awareness campaign in print media was also continuing by focusing on warning public against possible financial scams, fake housing societies, unrecognized educational institutions, etc.

Replying to the question of Dr Azra Fazal Pechcho, he said several laws were in the pipeline including the establishment of a National Commission for protection of child rights. The proposed bills envisage enhancement of minimum age for fixing criminal responsibility.

He said in the wake of Constitutional 18th amendment, the provincial governments can make legislation on minor (children) issues. Legislation pertaining to child rights were in process including Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill 2014, Juvenile Justice System Bill, 2015, ICT Child Protection and Welfare Bill 2015, Hindu Marriage, Bill 2014, Christian Marriage Restraint, Domestic Violence (Prevention and Protection ) Bill 2014 and draft bill for Provincial Commission on the Status of Women in Baluchistan.

Replying to a question of Sheikh Salahuddin he said the reports of Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) for the year 2009-10

and 20110-12 have already been sent to Parliamentary Affairs Division for laying the same before the Parliament.

He said parliament has the powers to legislate on recommendations

of CII. After the enactment of Constitutional 18th amendment,

marriage related laws enactment is in jurisdiction of the provincial governments.

Moreover, reports for 2012-13 and 2013-14 are being processed for publication which will be presented shortly after publication.
