SIALKOT: Punjab government has formulated a plan for the promotion of sunflower and other oil seed crops in the province.
Sources in Agriculture department here told APP on Friday that under the programme over 87,000 acres of land would be brought under Sunflower cultivation in various areas of Punjab.In Sialkot district, Sunflower will be cultivated on over 2000 acres, sources added.
Agriculture department has directed the growers to use only recommended and authenticated seeds for obtaining maximum output and follow guidelines of agriculture experts.
At present only 34 percent edible oil is being produced within the country and 66 percent being imported for meeting the domestic need.
The sunflower crop could play a vital role in enhancing the production of edible oil as sunflower seeds have 40 percent oil capacity.
