imageKARACHI: Commissioner Karachi, Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui has urged the citizens to demand officially approved price lists from all shopkeepers and stall vendors visited by them for purchase of food items.

Talking to APP Thursday, he said the administration is conscious of reported rise in the cost of different vegetables in the local markets, despite the fact that these are in-season and there ought to be no shortage of the same.

"Adequate measures are being taken to ensure that these are not only readily available but also at affordable rates," said Siddiqui.

In reply to a question, he attributed disappearance of ginger from the market as a pressure tactic adopted by sellers who are affected by the crackdown against those engaged in chemical treatment of this essential ingredient used in local dishes.

"We had immediately responded and without making any compromises on its quality and safety, there is currently no shortage of ginger in the metropolis," he said.

The Commissioner claimed that a campaign launched by his office against profiteers, hoarders and adulterators is producing desired results.

"These shopkeepers are now cognizant of action against them in case of violating rules," he said.

The Commissioner said the exercise could be made all the more relevant and effective once consumers, that is, citizens in general also realise their responsibility.

"They need to start demanding price list from each of the shops visited by them," said the Commissioner.

In reply to a question, he said consumers if refused to be provided with the official price lists can immediately contact the complaint center, operational round the clock at the Commissioner office, via e.mail ([email protected]) or phone number 99203443.

Refusal by shopkeepers to show price lists amounts to denial of citizens' rights guaranteed under the law, reiterated Shoaib.
