‘Batman’ star Ben Affleck defended Islam on a US talk show hosted by outspoken Bill Maher. He was promoting his latest release where Maher introduced the topic arguing the case that liberals need to stand up for liberal principles and Islamic beliefs didn’t sit with what true liberals believe.
Maher argued that liberal people were afraid of criticising Islam for its stance on women’s and gay rights, with fellow panelist Sam Harris describing the religion as ‘the motherload of bad ideas’. On which an agitated Affleck said, “Hold on, are you the person who officially understands the codified doctrine of Islam? Your characterization is gross and racist. It’s like saying ‘Oh, you shifty Jew!’”.
He accused Maher and Harris of stereotyping a large group of people based on a small minority of radicals. He said, “How about the more than a billion people who aren’t fanatical, who don’t punish women, who just want to go to school, eat some sandwiches and pray five times a day?”.
Maher also argued that “It’s the only religion that acts like the Mafia, that will f***ing kill you if you say the wrong thing, draw the wrong picture, or write the wrong book”.
“What is your solution? That we condemn Islam? We’ve killed more Muslims than they’ve killed us by an awful lot, and we’ve invaded more Islamic nations. But we’re exempted from these things?,” Affleck retorted.
According to foreign media reports Mehar later supported his argument in another interview saying, “We’re liberals! We’re not crazy teabaggers, and so it's kind of hard to be making this case based on facts, based on polling, I think based on what everybody really knows”.
Another American TV host Bill O’Reilly supported Mehar and said, “Mr. Maher is correct about the overall effect Islam is having on the world right now. Ben Affleck should well understand that he himself would be beheaded in a heartbeat by these ISIS animals”.
