imageMULTAN: Agriculture experts have advised growers to begin onion nursery sowing from last week of July in soil having proper water absorption capability to get good production.

Before sowing, growers must mix animal waste fertilizers at the rate of one maund per marla and irrigate fields, says a release issued by media liaison unit of Punjab agriculture department on Wednesday.

Growers should plough the field twice or thrice and then apply land leveller and leave the field empty to wait for growth of weeds fr their proper removal.

Seed sowing ratio be maintained at 3-4 kilogram per acre and registered varieties of onion including 'Phulkara' or Dark Red be utilized.

Soil be prepared again by ploughing three to four times and application of land leveller at the time of sowing. Beds be prepared with smaller drains to ensure that excess water is drained out in case of rain. These small drains upon receiving water in hot weather conditions lessen the soil temperature and improves nursery growth.

One centimetre deep lines be drawn on the beds while maintaining a distance of seven to eight cm. Seed be put into the depth of these lines and covered with 'Bhal', a kind of fertile soil.

Water should be sprinkled on beds. A combination of 5mm thick and 5 metre long metallic rods with plastic sheet be utilized to cover the nursery to increase temperature for subsequent improvement in its growth.

Plastic be removed in the morning time after nursery bud out of the soil. It will enable nursery to go through day time heat to be able to bear low temperature during night time.

Holes of insects inside or near the nursery field be plugged immediately otherwise insects would take away the seed, experts warned.

Growers should apply pesticides after consulting experts in case of pest attack.
