Automobile maker Jaguar Land Rover is now planning to help people fight against superbugs and believes that through its car of the future, it could help stop spreading of diseases.

British automaker Jaguar Land Rover is looking forward to build a futuristic car that will use ultraviolet light (UV-C) in order to kill bacteria, viruses and allergens present inside the cabin. This could, hence, lead to stop spreading of various diseases caused by these pathogens.

The air conditioning system inside the future models of the vehicles would blast off the unwanted organisms with medical-grade UV-C light, breaking down the pathogen’s DNA which will neutralize them and render them harmless. Clean air will then be released into the cabin, explained Jaguar Land Rover.

“In the colder months infections are spread more easily, it’s reassuring to know that in your car at least, you can be confident that harmful pathogens are being neutralized,” said Jaguar Land Rover chief medical officer, Steve Iley.

Though the approach cannot ensure good health, but it can minimize the chances of catching easily spread illnesses such as the cold or flu. The firm also claims that this approach could reduce the spread of and fight against drug-resistant superbugs.

“The implementation of individual wellbeing measures as part of our ‘tranquil sanctuary’ research promises to not only improve quality of life for our customers but in this case, offers clear advantages in reducing pathogen spread – protecting the overall population from the threat of disease; particularly as we move towards shared mobility solutions,” explained Iley.

However, Jaguar Land Rover has not yet disclosed about how close it is to complete such an AC system with built-in UV-C, let alone actually integrating it inside a production car, wrote Engadget.
