KARACHI: Police here on Monday intercepted a convoy of relief goods including food, water and medicines that was on way to Lyari to provide emergency relief to the besieged people there.

The relief convoy arranged by Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi was loaded on trucks and consisted of ration bags, wheat flour, rice, cooking oil, beans and legumes, sugar, dried food and bottled water. Ambulances of Al-Khidmat Foundation along with doctors, paramedics were also the part of relief convoy.

The convoy led by ex-mayor of Karachi Niamatullah Khan Advocate, JI Karachi amir Muhammad Hussain Mehanti, ex-PMA Muhammad Yunus Barai, Raja Arif Sultan and Syed Abdul Rasheed,on reaching Ghas Bander, the police greeted it with aerial firing and stopped it from entering Lyari.

Some senior citizens and women joining the convoy received minor injuries, as many convoy participants ran helter-skelter to save their lives due to intense aerial firing.

However, the rally leaders refused to leave and tried their best to persuade the police allowing them entering Lyari to save lives of the besieged people.

Mehnati later told media that the government is not serious in the restoration of peace in Lyari.

He said depriving people from basic necessities of food, water and electricity was violation of basic human rights.

He said the JI just wanted to help their Lyari brethren in this trying time. He said they did not trust the police and that they wanted to distribute their relief goods amongst the needy people on their own.

He demanded that the ongoing operation in Lyari be ended henceforth and water and electricity supply to the locality be restored at once.
