imageBERLIN: German Chancellor Angela Merkel will visit Wednesday a refugee centre which was hit by violent far-right protests, her office said in a statement.

"The Chancellor will hold a dialogue with refugees, volunteers and security staff in Heidenau," her office added.

Merkel on Monday hit out at the protests over the weekend by neo-Nazis and far-right extremists against a refugee home in the eastern German town of Heidenau, condemning them as "vile".

Germany is expecting to receive 800,000 asylum-seekers this year, a record number.

But the sudden surge in refugees has also sparked anti-migrant sentiment among some, particularly in eastern Germany, which still lags behind the west in terms of jobs and opportunities 25 years after reunification.
