imageISLAMABAD: Minister for Interior and Narcotics Control Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan Thursday informed the National Assembly that formal inauguration of 124 millon dollar, " Safe city Islamabad project" would be held next month.

Replying to a question, he said that Safe City project was negotiated and signed in 2009 at a total cost of US$ 124,975 million.

He said that so far total of Rs 9.53 billion as cost of project and Rs 4 billion on account of duties and taxes have been expended.

He said that its implementation was withheld due to a decision of the Supreme Court and on conclusion of litigation, the project was reinitiated in 2014 without any cost escalation.

He said that present government had negotiated a substantial increase in scope of the project without adding to project cost.

Interior Minister said that number of cameras have been increased from 1500 to 1950, adding in addition to facial detection system, camera based facial recognition software had been included.

He said that video summary software and 4G technology had been acquired for CCTV cameras.

The present government ensured that no cost escalation was allowed even after a lapse of 5 years of initial signing, he said.

He said that integration of vehicle registration database with safe city was also being carried out.

Interior Minister said that CCTV cameras would help reduce crime rate in the capital, adding Islamabad Police had traced two major cases with the help of safe city project.
