The GMU welcomed a three-member visiting delegation from NUST, headed by its Rector Muhamad Asghar at a reception in Fairfax, hosted by Siddique Sheikh, Chairman of Pakistan American Business Association. Congressman Rob Wittman, former lawmaker Tom Davis, Fairfax chief, Sharon Bulova, faculty members and officials from the State department attended the event.

In his opening remarks, Angel Cabrera, President GMU, said the university, the largest in Virginia, is committed to diversity and has a deep interest in forging global linkages. Partnerships with institutions such as NUST bring together diversities in discussing global problems and finding solutions, he added.

NUST Reactor, Asghar, praised the GMU as one of America's best educational institutions and informed the gathering that the NUST was keen to promote ties with GMU in educational and research efforts, including exchange of students and faculty in joint projects. "We are looking ahead to a strategic partnership with GMU", said Asghar.

Earlier, a documentary film on NUST highlighted progress it has made in various disciplines including engineering, Information Technology, Medicine, Management, Natural and Basic Sciences. Established in 1991, NUST is listed among the world's top 500 universities in the 2014-15 ranking by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) of UK.

Addressing the gathering, Siddique Sheikh, who is on the GMU's Board of Visitors as well as a member the Advisory Board Council NUST, emphasized the importance of education in bridging differences and promoting peace and brotherhood around the world. He expressed the hope that the growing collaboration between NUST and GMU would immensely benefit students and scholars from Pakistan.

He asked the participants to help efforts towards promoting educational linkages between Pakistan and the United States both at the government as well as people-to-people level.
