Opposition in Sindh Assembly Wednesday approached Sindh High Court (SHC) against what if called "violation of constitution" by speaker of provincial assembly for not convening the session despite the requisition of opposition parties.

Leader of Opposition in Sindh Assembly Firdous Shamim Naqvi sent a letter to Chief Justice SHC and sought his intervention to order Speaker to convene session of assembly.

In the letter he stated, "Members of the Sindh Assembly belonging to the opposition parties namely Pakistan Therik-e-Insaf, Muttathida Qaumi Movement, and Grand Democratic Alliance had under article 54 of the Constitution of Pakistan had requisitioned the session of Sindh Assembly on 7th of May 2020.

As per the constitution, the session has to be held within 14 days of the requisitioning, Naqvi said, added "in our case it would be the 20th May 2020."

He pointed out that the session was specially requisitioned to discuss the back breaking situation which has evolved due to the Coronavirus Pandemic in Sindh.

Naqvi said that session of other assemblies has taken place during the current prevalent situation and added that speaker had called the session for the 20th of May on 18th of May 2020 in Sindh Assembly at 11am.

However for reasons not stated in the subsequent notice the session of the assembly was adjourned to June 3, without holding the session.

Opposition leader called the move totally unconstitutional, which has no parallel under democratic principles and norms.

He termed it violation of constitution and asked Chief Justice to order Speaker of Sindh Assembly to convene the session as per the requirements envisaged in constitution.
