This is apropos a letter to the Editor "Healthcare, social security systems needed" carried by the newspaper yesterday. It is quite true that Rashed Rahman in this op-ed 'Healthcare, social security system needed' carried by the newspaper on Tuesday strongly highlighted the increased hardships of the working class during lockdowns in an effective manner.

Having said that, I commend Mr Majyd Aziz for his proposal that he has offered to both the government and SBP by saying that the governments "must tone down their fiery populism in view of some unprecedented challenges facing the businesses." He has urged SBP to "allow businesses to rationalize workforce through job cuts and reduced salaries in the most judicious manner possible even if they are extended lending by banks in the head of employees' salaries."

What I have observed so far is that many banks are not implementing the SBP scheme in its true essence. The central bank may ask banks to refrain from excessive adherence to official rules and formalities because the situation created by coronavirus outbreak is becoming more and more challenging on each successive day; gradually and steadily.
