A first Pakistani national has died of coronavirus in Italy, the Foreign Office confirmed on Wednesday, as the death toll rose to 631 as of March 11 in the most-affected European country. "A 61-year-old Imtiaz Ahmad, unfortunately, died of coronavirus in a place called Brescia, 100 miles from Milan in Italy," said Foreign Office spokesperson Aisha Farooqui.

She said Pakistan's consulate in Milan had been in touch with the family and Italian authorities on the matter. Ahmad is the first Pakistani to have died of the coronavirus.

According to Dr Zafar Mirza, prime minister's special assistant on health services, who on Tuesday stated that there were 19 confirmed cases in Pakistan brought from abroad with no evidence of local spread of the virus so far. "Cases in Pakistan have more than doubled in the last 24 hours. This is not surprising. The disease has spread in 106 countries. All 19 cases have brought this from abroad. All are stable. There is no evidence of local spread, as yet. If we act responsibly we can avoid spread," Dr Mirza said in a tweet.
