Prime Minister Imran Khan and former Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Saqib Nisar performed on Thursday the  groundbreaking of the Mohmand Dam.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Defence Minister Pervez Khattak, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Shah Farman and KP Chief Minister Mahmood Khan and Federal Minister for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Dr Noor-ul-Haq Qadri along with other officials, local media reported.

The dam has the capacity of storing about 1.2 million acres feet (MAF) of water. Mohmand Dam on completion will generate 800 megawatt electricity and will bring about 16,000 acres barren land under cultivation.

It will also solve the problem of water scarcity in Mohmand besides saving Peshawar, Charsadda and Nowshera districts from floods. According to the SBP data, the fund has so far raised Rs. 10,402,081,797. Mohmand Dam which is being constructed on Swat River, will be completed by 2024.

Last year,  the former CJP took the initiative of collecting donations to overcome the country’s water scarcity. He was then joined by the prime minister and the fund was called the Supreme Court of Pakistan and the Prime Minister of Pakistan Diamer-Bhasha and Mohmand Dams Fund.
