An accountability court indicted on Monday Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif in the Ashiana Housing scheme case.

The hearing was headed by Judge Syed Najamul Hassan where Sharif was also present. The judge framed charges against Sharif, which the Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N) president rejected, local media reported. The opposition leader will contest the charges against him in the court.

The accountability court also framed charges against the former principal secretary to the then prime minister Nawaz Sharif, Fawad Hassan Fawad and others accused in the Ashiana Housing scandal.

On February 14, the Lahore High Court had granted bail to the PML-N president in the Ashiana Housing and the Ramzan Sugar Mills case. The opposition leader had been in National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) custody since October 5 last year.

NAB arrested him for corruption in the Ashiana housing scheme case. In November last year, NAB again arrested the opposition leader in the Ramzan Sugar Mills case alleging that Sharif had used public funds for the construction of a bridge linking to their mills in Chiniot, Punjab.
