Customs authorities Sunday foiled a major attempt of smuggling of Afghan origin cannabis from Afghanistan at Customs Border Station of Torkham. It is learnt that a serious attempt of narcotics was foiled on Sunday by customs. The incident took place at custom station Torkham.
Details of the incidence revealed that an empty Pakistani Bedford truck bearing registration No RIR 6275 driven by Qayyum Shah s/o Aslam Shah entered the Import Terminal from Afghanistan. The Appraisement staff posted in port yard noticed that the driver was nervous. Therefore, cursory search was carried out. The search revealed that the spare tyre was stuffed with something. On further search, concealment was found which led to the detection of 15 packets of Afghan origin cannabis weighing 18 kg. The driver narrated a concocted story and could not satisfy the Customs staff regarding his smuggling attempt. He was taken into custody by the custom staff for smuggling of cannabis into Pakistan. The recovered cannabis along with accused and truck were taken into custody under the relevant provision of Customs and other laws in vogue. The case property along with the accused was handed over to the prosecution/investigation branch for further investigation of the case and registration of FIR.
The accused Qayyum Shah will be produced before the special judge custom, Taxation and Anti-Smuggling, Peshawar for obtaining remand from the court for further investigation.
At the moment the staff of the prosecution/investigation branch are busy preparing documents, statements and files while preliminary investigation are underway and the accused is being probed. The Chief collector of customs north Asif Mahmood has appreciated the staff and directed for vigilance against such attempts of smuggling narcotics.
