Where loneliness is among the least understood and clinically recognized mental illness, it can leave lasting impacts on human bodies. To combat loneliness, scientists are working on a pill that will help treat the illness.

Researchers are claiming to be working on a pill that will help fight off loneliness among individuals. The pill will help ease the person’s mind, soothe the brain activit and prevent them from causing harm to human mind and body.

The team believes that loneliness occurs when chemical signals that encourage individuals to reach out to others, but our minds instead perceive social dangers like social anxiety, hence keeping us away from reaching out, as per Futurism.

In order to keep these feelings from being overwhelming, the team is looking towards a neuro-steroid named ‘pregnenolone’ made by our body that helps ease the mind’s anxiety and over-perception of potential dangers. The goal isn’t to eliminate the feelings of loneliness, but to inhibit these feelings from causing harmful effects on the mind and body.

“If we could successfully reduce the alarm system in the minds of lonely individuals, then we could have them reconnect, rather than withdraw from others,” lead researcher Stephanie Cacioppo told The Guardian.
