Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders have challenged the party position of Maryam Nawaz in Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) before the Election Commission of Pakistan, terming it a violation of election laws. PTI leaders Farrukh Habib, Maleeka Bukhari, Kanwal Shauzab and Javera Zafar challenged the appointment of Maryam Nawaz as vice president of PML-N and termed it contrary to the Constitution.
The petitioners claimed that Maryam Nawaz has been declared disqualified for any political or public office. They said that an accountability court declared the PML-N leader ineligible for public office and added that a party position is not in private capacity. Later talking to media persons outside the Election Commission office, Maleeka Bukhari said any party position to Maryam Nawaz is violation of Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution as she is a convict.
Farrukh Habib said the PTI will continue its efforts for ensuring supremacy of law in the country, and it will not let anyone usurp people's rights. He argued that there is lack of leadership in the PML-N as the party wants the 'law of Raiwind' to be enforced in whole Pakistan. He said that "test tube leadership" is being enforced forcefully.
Kanwal Shauzab said there is a democracy in the country and no one will be allowed to violate the Constitution. Last week, PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif approved major changes in the party's structure, including Maryam's appointment as vice president of the party.
Earlier, the PML-N had announced major re-organisation after consultation with party leaders and supremo Nawaz Sharif. According to notification issued from London, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was appointed senior vice president of the party while Ahsan Iqbal was made general secretary.
