Corporate democracy is prevailing in Pakistan not real democracy. Even ideal electoral system cannot deliver without people's awareness. The concept of freedom is impossible without economic independence.
These thoughts were shared by speakers during 53rd conference of Pakistan Visionary Forum on the topic of "Electoral System in Pakistan" held at TECH Society Club Lahore on Sunday.
Former Chief Justice Lahore High Court Justice Mian Allah Nawaz, former Minister of State Qayyum Nizami, Agricultural Scientist Dr Muhammad Sadiq, former Advisor Comsats Dr Hasibullah, Jameel Gishkori, Engr. Mahmudur Rehman Chughtai, Abdul Majeed Khan, former Advisor IMF Khalid Saleem, former Auditor General Punjab Jameel Bhatti, Professor Dr Atiya Syed, Aleena Tiwana, Professor Dr Mugheesuddin, Professor Mashkoor Ahmed, Engr. Yaqoob Chaudhry and Ghulam Muhammad Lali participated in the conference.
Former Justice Mian Allah Nawaz quoted saying of world renowned intellectual that a society in which land prices go up could not survive as the industry and trade of that society remain in crisis and productivity, equal distribution of resources, employment opportunities severely hamper. He suggested political debates in TV shows rather conducting demonstrations with huge expenses.
Dr Muhammad Sadiq said we need such an electoral system fruits of which can be reached to a common man. Qayyum Nizami said positive change in our society was not possible without channelizing the energies of people in a productive way. Professor Dr Atiya Syed said even the ideal election system cannot deliver without positive change of mindsets of masses. Professor Dr Mugheesuddin said corporate democracy is a hurdle for the middle class honest and capable political leadership. Positive thought provoking sessions are necessary for change in our society, he added.
Salman Abid said only introducing political reforms could not bear fruits unless Election Commission of Pakistan works effectively like Indian Election Commission. He demanded immediate disqualification of elected representatives by Election Commission of Pakistan who have not declared their assets.
