Pakistan Peoples Party on Monday demanded the government to constitute a judicial commission led by Chief Justice of Pakistan and having assistance of a foreign forensic team and Stolen Asset Recovery Initiative of World Bank to probe assets of Sharif family. Speaking during a joint sitting of the parliament on Panama leaks, Leader of Opposition in the Senate Senator Aitzaz Ahsan rejected an inquiry commission announced by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to probe into the offshore companies of his three children, Hassan Nawaz, Hussain Nawaz and Maryam Nawaz.
"We want the government to constitute a judicial commission under the chief justice and a foreign forensic team should be hired to help it ascertain the facts .... and we also want the government to seek assistance of Stolen Asset Recovery Initiative of World Bank to bring the stolen assets of Sharif family," he said. Ahsan also cited different reasons for rejecting the inquiry commission announced by the prime minister. He said the report of a judicial commission on Model Town incident wherein 14 people were killed is yet to be made public.
He also said the Supreme Court of Pakistan was stormed by the PML-N, but nobody was held accountable for it. If the prime minister's children are clean, then why the ruling party is afraid of the accountability, he asked, adding the prime minister should present himself for a robust inquiry instead of accusing other parties for the wrongdoings. He also questioned the mode of money transfer from Pakistan to Saudi Arabia and United Kingdom and urged the government to disclose all details of the funds transfer.
During Aitzaz Ahsan's speech, members from the treasury benches kept shouting "LPG Quota" and "Surrey Palace" despite repeated instructions from Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq to restore order in the house. The meeting of the house was adjourned for 20 minutes for Zuhr prayer, but it prolonged for two hours. When the house resumed, the speaker apologised from the members, saying the break prolonged as the government and opposition members were busy in developing consensus on the Pakistan International Airlines Corporation (Conversion) Bill, 2016.
Responding to the points raised by Senator Aitzaz Ahsan, PML-N Senator Mushahidullah Khan said the PML-N has had its government in Punjab for the last 8 years and in the centre for the last three years, but there is not a single case of corruption against the party. "Nawaz Sharif is struggling day and night for progress of the country and we know he'll have to pay price for it," he said. He said the government is doing its best to complete the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), but some elements want to disrupt it.
Mushahidullah Khan also lambasted Aitzaz Ahsan for changing his loyalties and benefiting from different governments. During Khan's speech, members from opposition benches, however, kept chanting slogans, "pay your taxes" and "offshore companies."
