A contempt plea has been filed in the Supreme Court against federal and provincial governments over non-implementation of the apex court verdict regarding implementation of Urdu as official language. On September 8, the then Chief Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja, had issued directives to federal and provincial governments to adopt Urdu as official language and submit an implementation report in this regard by December 8.
On Tuesday, advocate Kokab Iqbal filed a contempt petition, saying all the official business was being carried out in English language which he termed a severe violation of the apex court orders. Iqbal submitted that the Prime Minister had constituted a committee but, according to him, it failed to observe the court's directives in true letter and spirit. Federal and provincial governments through Establishment Division, Information and law ministries have been made respondents in the contempt petition.
