Users of WhatsApp will soon be able to save their chat history, voice messages, photos and videos in Google Drive, the cloud storage service of US search giant Google. The new backup feature will allow users to restore everything to a new device. However, the feature will only be available to those using the Android version of the popular messaging app, not the iPhone version.
Users will be able to see in the app's settings menu when the cloud backup is available. It'll be possible to choose between daily, weekly and monthly backups or whether to never back up at all.
WhatsApp users will also be able to choose whether to back up videos or not, an option which should be particularly useful for people on mobile phone contracts that only allow limited monthly data use. The new feature will be released gradually over the coming months.
