A UN peacekeeper was killed and another injured when gunmen opened fire on a United Nations convoy in the Central African Republic on Tuesday, the UN said. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the killing of the soldier from a Burundian infantry company serving in the UN MINUSCA force during an exchange of fire some 55 kilometers (34 miles) north of the capital Bangui. Ban called for "swift action to bring the perpetrators of this crime to justice" and renewed calls for armed groups to end the fighting, his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Wednesday.
There has been an upsurge in violence in the Central African Republic, which has been struggling to recover from a 2013 coup that unleashed a wave of bloodletting between Muslim rebels and Christian militias.
