Unabated overfishing continues to scale down the country's seafood catch resulting in a sharp fall in its export by over 17 percent to $17.588 million in July 2015. Pakistan continues to suffer $3.613 million loss in July - a first month of the new fiscal year 2015-16 as compared to the seafood export of $21.201 million in July 2014-15, according to Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.
Exporters and fishermen continued slamming the Sindh government for its 'deaf' approach towards the perilous conditions of the fisheries sector with no rules implementation to streamline the fish and shrimp hunting. In terms of volume, seafood export however showed over two percent or 206 tons of growth to 8,528 tons in July 2015-16 as compared to the fisheries export of 8,322 tons in July 2014-15.
The fisheries stakeholders have asked the government to enforce laws to curb the illegal fishing nets that troubled the entire sector and reduced the landing significantly for the last several years. They said there should be a systemic enforcement of laws to improve fisheries catch.
On a monthly basis, the country's seafood export in July 2015 plummeted by 29 percent or $7.085 million from $24.673 million in June 2015. In terms of volume, the country's seafood export slumped by 20 percent or 2,112 tons in July 2015 from 10,640 tons in June 2015, the official statistics said. Pakistan faced a $20 million seafood export decline during last fiscal year to $349.557 million from $369.458 in the corresponding fiscal year. In terms of volume, the country's seafood export scaled down by 7 percent or 9,859 tons last fiscal year to 140,639 tons compared to 150,498 tons in 2013-14.
