"The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Punjab has recovered Rs 1.483 billion through Voluntary Return (VR), Plea Bargain (PB) during the first five months of 2014 in various corruption cases." This was disclosed by the Chairman NAB, Qamar Zaman Chaudhry at Regional NAB HQ Punjab here on Thursday.
Earlier, Chairman NAB presided a meeting regarding annual inspection of the Regional NAB Punjab which was attended by the senior officers from the NAB Headquarters and Regional Bureau Punjab. Director General NAB Punjab briefed the Chairman about the cases being pursued by the Regional Bureau and progress of the Region on different accounts. Chairman NAB Qamar Zaman Chaudhry directed that all Complaint Verifications (CVs) inquiries and investigations must be completed within given timeline and court cases be pursued proactively to achieve maximum results.
He said that NAB Headquarters would carry out random checks of the cases at different stages including complaints, inquiries, investigations and prosecution. He also directed that combined Investigation Team (CITs) system must be strengthened and implemented in letter and spirit for early finalisation of cases while ensuring quality of investigation and prosecution. Chairman also directed that uniformity in working of all the Regional NABs must be ensured.
He directed that special focus should be given to awareness and prevention activities to spread the message against corruption. NGOs, media and corporate sector should be involved in developing awareness and publicity material. Chairman NAB also held a detailed meeting with prosecutors of NAB. He desired more effective linkage between investigation and prosecution to achieve satisfactory results.
Director General NAB Punjab, Husnain Ahmed speaking on the occasion apprised that NAB has completed 463 cases in last five months. NAB Punjab has established 14,271 Character Building Societies (CBSs) in the province. He further informed that the Regional NAB has processed 2,355 complaints since January 2014. The increased number of complaints according to him is reflective of the confidence of the public in NAB. During this period 69 inquiries were disposed off leaving the balance of 323 inquiries in progress, whereas 33 investigations has been authorised in this period and currently 95 investigations are in progress in the Regional Bureau. He apprised Chairman that the Regional Bureau is actively pursuing the cases in different courts to get the cases decided with maximum conviction of the accused. He reiterated his resolve to meet the new prosecution related benchmarks set out by the organisation.
