A writ petition challenging the appointment of Pervaiz Rathore as member Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) was filed in the Islamabad High Court on Tuesday by Sohail Bhatti through his counsel Advocate Hafiz Irfan Ahmed Chaudhry. The petitioner made Pervaiz Rathore, Pemra, Secretary Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Secretary Cabinet Division, respondents in the case.
The petitioner pleaded that chairman and members of Pemra should be appointed only by the President of Pakistan as per the Pemra ordinance, however, in total disregard to the prescribed rule Rathore was appointed by the Prime Minister in 2014. The petitioner further pleaded that 64-year-old Pervaiz Rathore has been appointed as Pemra member for a four-year term while as per the law the retirement age is 65 years, pleading the court to declare Rathore's appointment invalid. The petition was fixed for hearing today (Wednesday).
