Asim Munir emerges as key strategic leader amid shifting global order: FT

  • The British newspaper highlights CDF's role in steering Pakistan's multi-dimensional foreign policy

British newspaper The Financial Times has described Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir as an emerging and effective strategic leader in a rapidly changing global system, citing his role in shaping Pakistan’s multi-dimensional foreign policy.

In an analysis of shifting global power dynamics, the British newspaper said the evolving international order has created new challenges for so-called “middle powers,” where flexible, pragmatic, and multi-aligned diplomacy has become increasingly important.

The report noted that Field Marshal Munir has emerged as one of the more successful practitioners of this approach, demonstrating an ability to balance competing global interests while advancing Pakistan’s diplomatic objectives.

According to the article, Pakistan has maintained active and parallel engagement with major global and regional players, including the United States, China, Saudi Arabia, and Iran, opening new diplomatic pathways and enhancing its strategic space.

The Financial Times described this policy as a notable example of effective middle-power diplomacy in the current global environment.

The newspaper also pointed to Field Marshal Munir’s alignment with former US President Donald Trump’s informal diplomatic style, saying his timely outreach, courteous engagement, and measured tone helped advance Pakistan’s interests during a complex phase of international relations.

The report added that Pakistan’s diplomatic gains under this approach have caused frustration in India, which, it said, has struggled to formulate an equally effective middle-power strategy amid shifting global dynamics and Trump’s unconventional diplomacy.

It added that Field Marshal Asim Munir has played a central role in advancing Pakistan’s multi-pronged foreign policy, positioning himself as a prominent strategic figure in the evolving global order.
