Young doctors in Punjab on Wednesday called off their protest movement following acceptance of their demands. Young Doctors Association (YDA) President Hamid Butt announced dissolution of present general body of the YDA; however, the existing body would continue to perform its functions till elections of new general body.
As per schedule, the young doctors gathered outside Chief Minister's House to press the government for acceptance of their demands including revised service structure. However, the leadership of the YDA, which was already in touch with the government representatives came out and announced that the provincial government had accepted their demands; hence, we are calling our 4-month long protest movement. They said their protest movement was for acceptance of their demands, hence, after acceptance of their demands, we are abandoning the protest movement. The sources claimed that formal announcement regarding agreement between the representatives of YDA and provincial government is being announced on Thursday (today). The YDA representatives said the new service structure for doctors had been agreed upon by the government. Moreover, the patients coming from far flung areas had to face problems due to thin attendance of doctors in government hospitals. The outdoor patient departments (OPDs) were seen deserted due to the absence of doctors while very few doctors were present in emergency wards of most of the public hospitals in Lahore.
Furthermore, on the directions of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Punjab Health Department has extended the contract of 91 nurses of Lahore General Hospital for one year more and a notification in this regard has been issued. Principal Post Graduate Medical Institute & Lahore General Hospital Professor Dr Anjam Habib Vohra said these nurses were recruited last year during dengue epidemic and they worked devotedly with a great sense of responsibility while serving dengue patients and defeating the disease.
