Chairman of the Senate Farooq H Naik has said that the Senate has passed as many as 16 bills during its Parliamentary year. He made these remarks while addressing the media at the completion of first parliamentary year of Senate after its renewal on March 12 last year.
He said that 14 Bills were received from the National Assembly and 02 were Private Member's Bills. Out of these, 09 Bills were made Acts of the Parliament. He said that in the same way 111 Resolutions were received, out of which 90 admitted. 287 Motions under rule 194 were received, out of which 260 admitted and 07 discussed in the House, he said.
He said that regular National Assembly and Senate sessions and debate on core issues such as terrorism, economy, energy, human rights and foreign, policy has brought home all actors the government seeks to uphold parliamentary supremacy.
"Calling in-camera sessions of the Parliament on sensitive security issues, flight against terror, and provincial matters such as issues related to the province of is perhaps the most significant accomplishment of this government".
"After assuming the office of Chairman Senate, I found that detailed and comprehensive Rules for the employees of the Parliamentary Secretariats were not framed. I therefore immediately asked the Secretariat to formulate comprehensive Rules. In fact the Constitution under Article 87 stipulates an Act of Parliament to regulate the terms & conditions of the service of employees of Parliament Secretariat. Base work on the draft of Bill has also been initiated to establish 'Senate of Pakistan Service'
He said that the people of Pakistan, time and again, have shown their deep commitment to the ideals of democracy. He added that they have rendered great sacrifices to achieve these ideals. The people of Pakistan have offered stiff resistance to all anti-democracy and anti-people forces who time and again derailed the process of democracy. We have fought tooth and nail to achieve this noble goal. Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was first to create awareness and mobilise the people of Pakistan for achievement of their basic rights.
