The President of Supreme Court Bar Association, Aitzaz Ahsan, has announced withdrawal of his earlier decision to quit the office of President of the bar and warned of launching a forceful protest movement if General Pervez Musharraf used Article 58(2) b of the Constitution against the sitting government.
He said that the legal fraternity all over the country would hold a strong protest movement if President Musharraf tried to stifle it from going ahead with the Bhurban declaration by using Article 58(2)b.
Addressing a press conference, he announced to recall his decision to resign as Bar President, pleading that this had been motivated from the announcement made by bar associations and office-bearers of the SCBA to also quit the office if he would resign as President of SCBA on the insistence of the community, when members had also tended to hunger strike till death to force him to recall his decision.
He said the situation at present was quite different from what it was previously. Now a parliament is in place; democracy and a democratic government, which took initiatives to restore the judges, are at work. So in this view and on being asked by the lawyers leadership he has decided to take part in the by-polls. He said he has applied for PPP ticket to contest the by-poll and he was thankful to PML(N) which had announced to accept him as a joint PPP-PML(N) candidate.
He specially thanked Nawaz Sharif for taking a bold stance on the judges' issue. He said the lawyers had no doubt about the promise made by the PML(N) and the PPP and parliamentary resolution on the restoration of judges.
About discussing NRO during meeting between Justice Iftikhar Muhammad and Asif Ali Zardari, he strongly denied it and said the meeting lasted about 20 minutes starting with fateha and ending at fateha for the departed soul of Benazir Bhutto who had expressed strong commitment for the restoration of deposed judges.
Of the fate of PCO judges in case judges are restored, he said he would not have objection if they are retained. He condemned killings of people in Karachi on April 9 and expressed sympathies with the bereaved families.
