RECORDER REPORT

ISLAMABAD: The government is considering different names to fill the post of the new Chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) as the incumbent Chairman Nisar Mohammad Khan will be retiring on January 18, 2017. Sources said name of the new FBR chairman is being finalised by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar with the approval of the Prime Minister. At present, there is no possibility of granting any extension in the tenure of existing FBR chairman.

When contacted, DG Media, Finance Division stated that the meeting between Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Revenue, Haroon Akhtar and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar has not taken place Monday regarding the appointment of new FBR chairman.

Sources said that in principle, the post of new chairman will be filled with a person who possessed at least one year tenure before his retirement for ensuring continuity at the top level. There is a strong possibility that the new FBR chairman may be appointed within the tax machinery.

The incumbent outgoing chairman Nisar Mohammad Khan belongs to Customs Group. In grade 22 among the top officers of Inland Revenue Service (IRS) included Dr Irshad, Chaudhry Safdar and Rana Seerat, who will be retiring during 2017. Other two top officials, ie, Khawaja Tanvir and Rehmatullah Wazir belong to Inland Revenue Service and are in Grade 21.
