Troops from the US-led coalition killed 20 extremists who attacked a patrol in an area of southern Afghanistan that has seen weeks of intense fighting, the coalition said Monday. Two coalition soldiers were wounded in the attack on Sunday in the Sangin district of southern Helmand province, the US-led coalition said in a media statement.
"Twenty extremists were killed after attacking a coalition patrol with small arms and mortar fire in the Sangin district of Helmand province on July 2," the statement said. The coalition did not give the nationality of the soldiers in the patrol.
TIMEBOMB AT UNIVERSITY KILLS WOMAN: A timebomb exploded in a classroom of female university students in Afghanistan's western city of Herat Monday, killing one woman and wounding eight others, police said.
The device blew up just after 9:00 am in the English-language section of the Herat University's education faculty, the city's police director Ghulam Sarwar Haidari told AFP.
"The explosion took place at a time when the class was out but still there were a number of girls inside the class," Haidari said.
The blast destroyed chairs and tables, and shattered the windows. Blood was smeared across the floor.
The bomb had been hidden in a rubbish bin, said the interior ministry in Kabul, which handles police matters.
