The Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) of Pakistan has been directed to submit feasibility report and complete project cost and details for setting up of two new thermal power plants of 450 MW each by September 20.
Federal Minister for Water and Power Liaquat Ali Jatoi gave these directives while presiding over a meeting with Wapda and Petroleum Ministry officials here on Friday.
The Petroleum Ministry has been asked to submit the report on availability of gas for these projects within two days so that it could be submitted for approval.
Sources said the Wapda has forecast an additional load of about 700 to 900 MW within next two to three years in the areas of Lahore, Faisalabad and Gujranwala due to increasing demand for industrial, commercial, agricultural and domestic connections. Wapda has proposed to set up two thermal power plants of 450 MW each in these areas. Wapda has also requested the government to allow one more thermal power station of 450 MW to meet future requirements.
Sources further added that government would consider Wapda's proposal for setting up of third power station. The Authority has asked the government to give go ahead for up-gradation of its existing thermal power stations.
Sources added Liaquat Ali Jatoi has assured Wapda that steps would be taken to meet future demand of power and to avoid load shedding.
The next meeting will be held in this regard in the third week of current month to finalise arrangements for new power projects.
