The government is actively considering curtailing its diplomatic staff in foreign missions/embassies to induct interior ministry officials to minimise chances of mistakes allegedly being committed in issuance of Machine Readable Passports (MRPs), sources told Business Recorder here on Monday.
They said the foreign office is categorically opposing the proposal, adding the proposal has been discussed in detail in the interior ministry, but consensus in this regard has not been developed.
If the proposed plan is materialised, a large number of employees from Directorate of Immigration and Passports will be sent abroad to diplomatic missions, sources said.
It was reliably learnt that government has received some complaints regarding errors being committed by the diplomatic staff in issuance of Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs) Pakistan-Origin Cards and MRPs to Overseas Pakistanis in various countries for lack of technical know-how.
Sources in the interior ministry, however, said there is another proposal under consideration through which the government intends to send officials abroad who are purely employees of the interior ministry.
It is noteworthy that majority of interior ministry officers above BPS-16 are controlled by the Establishment Division (ED) due to which they will not be eligible for the deputation abroad as per criterion set by the federal government, sources said.
